2022 “Solstice Stories of Celebration”

  • Friends of Brunel Park: The Emile Brunel Studio and Sculpture Garden 4008 State Route 28 Brunel Park at DeSilva Road Boiceville United States (map)

Friends of Brunel Park invite you to join artist-in-residence Allan Madahbee, Ojibwe artist and musician, for interactive presentations and performances celebrating the Summer Solstice at Brunel Park on Saturday June 18th from 10 am to 4 pm, with a Solstice Fire Drumming Ceremony featuring Allan and special guest performers from Spirit of Thunderheart.

Allan will discuss the significance of the instrument, explain the legend of the flute, and will demonstrate and play the Court flute, Branch flute, and his handmade reproductions of ancient flutes dating back 900 years. Participants will encounter a variety of flutes, examine their construction, and listen to the soothing sounds of these beautiful instruments. Allan will also discuss the significance and meaning of the Summer Solstice in Native cultural traditions and practice.  “My background includes music study in classical, blues, and contemporary Native American music for flute, hand drum, and guitar. The Chippewa flute is part of my ancestral background. I have been making these types of sacred wooden flutes by hand for several years. My Native American musical influences are Joseph Firecrow, Carlos Nakai, Willie Dunn, Kashtin, and several other Native artists. I also write several of my own songs. I believe it is important to keep our Native music traditions active, and to pass it on to future generations. “

Tickets are $15..00 in advance or $20.00 at the door for adults which includes the flute making demonstration workshop, Allan’s concert, and the Solstice Fire Drumming ceremony with Allan and Spirit of Thunderheart. Youth under 18 are welcomed for free.
